Gingerbread Math Number Tower Actvities

This free printable is the perfect tool for your counting or addition math centers. Your preschool and kindergarten students will learn number sense and build fine motor skills while using linking cubes to build a tower to match the gumdrops.

The hands-on activity comes with several options. There are black and white and color versions for both printing options. There is a matching recording sheet for more advanced learners, and there are 2 versions of this number sense activity.

Each gumdrop contains a domino that the students must practice counting and then build a tower with linking cubes to match. Then, they will practice writing numbers when they record the addition sentence on the recording sheet. This game covers so many math concepts!

Math Counting & Addition Mats

In kindergarten, number sense is such a vital math skill to learn. It is the basis for most math lessons and creates a strong foundation for the following grades. This gingerbread-themed math activity is a fun way to develop this skill.

Number sense isn’t the only thing that will be covered in this activity! Students will also practice number recognition, numbers and counting, one-to-one correspondence, and addition skills. This is something you are going to want to write in your lesson plans.

Bonus! It is super easy to put together and won’t take too much of your prep time! Once you get the freebie, you will print the option you want. Then slide the sheets into a wipe and write pocket or laminate for durability. Then gather some linking cubes, and you are ready to implement this resource and enjoy some hands-on math!

Playing the Gingerbread Counting Game

The first version shows a gumdrop with a domino inside of it. The students will use one color to create a tower for the left side of the domino and another color for the right side of the domino.

Then, they will combine the two towers to make one cube tower. Next, they will record the addition sentence they created.

For example, the domino shows a 2 and a 5. The students will make a tower with 2 greens and a tower with 5 reds. Then they will combine the towers to make one tower. They will, then, write the addition sentence 2+5=7.

The second version is similar but more complex by having them problem solve a little more. The gumdrop shows a number, and the students will build a tower using 2 colors of cubes that add up to that number.

Then, they will write an addition sentence to match the tower that they created.

For example, the gumdrop has a 2 on it. The student would create a tower with 2 colors (1 green and 1 red). Then, they would write the addition sentence to match (1+1=2).

More Ideas for the Number Towers Activity

The activity includes 2 versions to play for easy differentiation! These game boards could be used for a small group, math center, a whole class activity, an after-school tutoring group, and so much more.

Suppose your students aren’t ready to make addition sentences yet. In that case, you could use the gingerbread board with just numbers and have them make towers with one color to just practice counting and one-to-one correspondence while representing numbers. They could put the towers in numerical order from least to greatest to make the game a little more challenging.

They could also use different manipulatives like mini erasers, pom poms, or plastic gingerbread men. Students could also use gumdrops and toothpicks to create towers. This would make a great addition to a gingerbread stem challenge.

More Ideas

Early finishers would love to work together with a partner to build a tower for every gumdrop. This could be completed quietly once they have finished their main math lesson.

For students that excel at math, there is a recording sheet added in. The students would write their addition sentences that match the towers they built for each gumdrop. You could slide these into a wipe and write pocket and use dry eraser markers or use paper and pencil.

To make it even more complex, the students could draw a ten frame and transfer their number sentence into the ten frames. This would hit some common core goals with tens frames and provide the students with another learning opportunity.

Another option for the game board that shows numbers is to have the students write the number words that match the gumdrops to practice reading and spelling skills.

As you can see, the possibilities are endless with this gingerbread number towers math activity! Access it now to get learning in your classroom this winter!

Your students will benefit from so much practice on math concepts, and I can’t wait to save you time prepping!
